My favorite quotations about photography

posted on 2nd of march, 2010

I enjoy to write down my ideas for photography and writing, as well as I like to write down various thoughts of mine, nice sentences and quotations I have read etc.
A few days ago I have read throught one of my notebooks and I have found some photographic quotations.
It has been pleasant to read them and I wanted to share my favorite ones.

“Which of my photographs is my favorite? The one I’m going to take tomorrow." – Imogen Cunningham

"There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer." ~Ansel Adams

"There are no rules for good photographs, there are only good photographs." ~Ansel Adams

"Results are uncertain even among the more experienced photographers." - Matthew Brady

"I began to realize that the camera sees the world differently than the human eye and that sometimes those differences can make a photograph more powerful than what you actually observed." - Galen Rowell

"When you photograph a face . . .you photograph the soul behind it." - Jean -Luc Godard

"Sometimes I do get to places just when God's ready to have somebody click the shutter." - Ansel Adams

"Photography can only represent the present. Once photographed, the subject becomes part of the past." - Berenice Abbott

And which one is absolutaly favorite? :-) There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer.
I love this one.

Very insightful. I love the purple flowers image, too.

"There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer"

I love this one too, but I think that this quotation, "Which of my photographs is my favorite? The one I’m going to take tomorrow.", is also true and lovable, because I think that every one of us is always looking for hisher best shoot!

Thanks for sharing, Jitka! I have collected lots of photography quotes and many of them you brought up are my favorites. I love quotes and I could highlight any of them, but today I stumbled on one anonymous quote, which made me smile, but on the second thought I realized it has a deep meaning behind the witty words. Here it goes: "One photo out of focus is a mistake, ten photo out of focus are an experimentation, one hundred photo out of focus are a style."
:))) Isn't that so true, that all new exceptional ideas are considered at first as "mistakes" - "nobody doesn't do it...", but later (sometimes years later) it can become a trend. Thanks for the thought provoking article!

I liked the one about photographer and the viewer. And this one "I began to realize that the camera sees the world differently than the human eye and that sometimes those differences can make a photograph more powerful than what you actually observed." - Galen Rowell

I think that since I'm a digital newbie, I find this one the most comforting:
"Results are uncertain even among the more experienced photographers." - Matthew Brady

Thank you for these!

Hello, very nice quotations indeed...I like most "There are no rules for good photographs, there are only good photographs" which I guess does not apply for stock photography much :-)

Really nice post. My favourite? There are always two people in every picture [...]. Yes your same, it's great I think! Thank you to share it.

Wonderful. I heard Lord Snowdon, say tonight on the radio 4 that he doesn't like photographs and has only paintings and drawings on his drawing room wall. How sad that the ' Royal Photographer ' should think that. He ought after 70 years in photography be reading your post. David.

There will be times when you will be in the field without a camera. And, you will see the most glorious sunset or the most beautiful scene that you have ever witnessed. Don't be bitter because you can't record it. Sit down, drink it in, and enjoy it for what it is! ~DeGriff

These are great Jitka! I have two more for you.

"Every other artist begins with a blank canvas, a piece of paper...the photographer begins with the finished product"-Edward Steichen.

"Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever....it remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything.-Aaron Siskind.
Have a great day :)
