You know by now that we are living in a new paradigm for content creation (see my earlier post Microstock and the 'Stream of Content-ness' ). You also know (or should!) that this is not a reason to despair or be discouraged. As contributors experience the explosion of wonderful content, they should not view it as just more competition for them - they should not feel lost in the crowd.
One of my favorite writers, Clay Shirky, says in his book Here Comes Everybody: The Power of Organizing Without Organizations - "It’s not information overload. It’s filter failure". The primary "filter" for our own Dreamstime community is, of course, our search engine. All contributors should understand it, learn it, play with it and yes, CONTRIBUTE to it.
So how do you contribute to the search engine, besides making an effort to understand how your own METADATA (keywords) work to optimize search results and customer satisfaction for everyone? You can actually contribute directly by participating in the keymentoring feature of Dreamstime.
So what is keymentoring? There was a great post a while back about this function and how it works - Keymentoring: What a Neat Feature! Keymentoring is easy to use - just search for interesting images and look at the keywords - you will see two buttons there. One says "report" and the other "suggest". Click on "suggest" and contribute your own unique, relevant keywords to the image.
This not only helps the person who contributed the image - it helps you! First, it helps you by making Dreamstime searches more relevant as a whole - it adds depth and imagination to our metadata and keywords. It also helps you by stimulating your imagination as you look at how different images are keyworded by different contributors. It's a wonderful learning experience and a great way to train yourself in how best to manage your own metadata.
Remember - helping others helps you, it doesn't hurt you. When you start thinking that collaborating and contributing to the whole is a negative thing, you are using an out of date mindset. This is no longer a zero sum game - it is an infinite sum game - a river of content that we benefit from as individuals the more we contribute to it….
