Using free tools

posted on 24th of june, 2011

This is for all of the new members. All you old timers probably already have your tools you like.

I have been on DT for since last February but I have been doing photography as a hobby for a long time. I am also a computer specialist and have been a Linux enthusiast for about 10 years. When I decided to get serious about my photography and start doing Micro-stock I turned to the free tools available for Linux vice spending money I do not have for professional tools.

Gimp

Gimp is a great photo editing software that is free for all to use. There are numerous on-line tutorials and how-to's that can get any photographer started in the right direction.. Gimp does everything I need it to do and more that I have not even figured out how to do. Now there may be some Adobe hardcore users out there that will say Gimp does not do this or that but for the price, free, it works for someone on a limited budget like me.

Inkscape

Inkscape is a vector illustration program that I use Inkscape to make all of my illustrations. Just like with Gimp there may be some Adobe hardcore users out there that will say Inkscape does not do this or that but for the price, free, it works. The only major drawback is that Inkscape does not export natively to JPG. I have experimented with many different ways to convert the files to JPG and have found that exporting the page to a PNG file and then using Gimp to save as a JPG works the best for me. I can also save the file as an EPS if I want to upload an additional format.
