Offering Free Photos

posted on 24th of february, 2012

Since I started becoming more serious about photography I have learned the advantage of sometimes dong what I do for free. It is the old philosophy that if you have a gift, do not be afraid to share it. The perfect example came this past week.

I have done some free photography at my wife's school - shooting at Christmas Parties and the like. I had the agreement that I could shoot school areas an some of the staff, but no students. Well of course. And I had used the access to shoot a few things I intended for stock, but I am still learning and for one reason or another I never came up with a shot of stock quality.

Then I got a message from the Director of the school - "Hey, Barry Larking is visiting the school. Can you come by and take photos?"

Barry Larkin has just been elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Yeah, I'll do that. So I got to come in, hang with a Hall of Famer, get a lot of photos but the best moment is when the director introduced me to Barry "This is Richard, our official school photographer."

And from that session I had a lot of fun, and several usable photos. I gave a CD of pics to the director and the representative of the program - Sports United - that brings famous sports figures into different schools. I am working on some story angles, have a newspaper interested in some of my pics, while two of my shots have been accepted for editorial coverage. In July is the actual time when Barry is inducted into the Hall of Fame, and I expect there to be some interest in those photos coming closer.

Great contacts and some wonderful photo opportunities, all because I did some free photography for my wife's school.

Share the gift, friends.
