Assignments, Why Participate?

posted on 11th of april, 2012

The assignments are a pain in the neck. The chance of getting an image accepted as an assignment is dismal. It is alot of work!

So why participate? I participate because it pushes me to think a little harder about my shots. I participate because it takes me out of my comfort zone. I also participate because even if an image is not accepted for an assignment, I get some new and different material for my portfolio. More times than not, images that I have rejected for assignments are later accepted when I submit them as regular images.

I think we as photographers sometimes get caught in our own trap and tend to shoot the same way time after time and we tend to shoot the same subject matter. An assignment is really opportunity to reach out and try something new!

So when the next assignment comes ... try not to say "This assignment looks to hard", or "I don't like the subject matter". Look at it as an opportunity to try something new, try something different, get out of your comfort zone. Think about the concept and who knows, you just may get some great stock photo shots!

well the assignments are not hard in my opinion, or they are not tectonically hard, you just need to focus on the subject and that's it.

But you are correct that competition brings additional effort to the play, and it helps us to improve our skills.

You are right. And I have something written on this subject in my blog (My first 1000) . Best Regards

I had a great shot I might have taken from another site for the last assignment but was so busy I missed it. I love your image of the little girl and dog!

I worry about tying up an image but find that having it go to level 5 and getting more exposure with exclusive images seems to make up for it. I've submitted a few images as exclusive and haven't been sorry so far.

I wanted to participate in this last one, but was too afraid because it was soo dificult to keep children and pets still so ~I could take the perfect photo. But I should have tried. I will sure try next one.

Participating such assignment/s is big challenge for me. I should participate now. TFS.

You have to remember. Assignments are a lot easier to commit to when you are exclusive to DT. If not, you tie up a potentially great image to only one site. But I agree with you that the assignments are indeed challenging, especially with all the excellent talent here.

Yes, assignments are very difficult. I've also had many unsuccessful attempts so I go easy when trying on an assignment meaning 1 or 2 submissions max so as not to lower my acceptance ratio too much. I'm glad when I get an assignment accepted, but it doesn't mean it will necessarily sell. In any case I agree with you that it is definitely a good exercise.

I became aware of the assignment challenge 4 seasons ago. I wanted to participate in the first one but got caught in deadline (friendly sales staff). I participated in the next 3 but got accepted only once.

Youre right we should keep on participating.:))

I participated in the last one because 1. It was fun and 2. I had the subjects needed. It is very challenging to get accepted but the payoff is nice.
