Generic stock vs. Authentic stock

posted on 10th of may, 2012

I am praying for that magic upload 25! And I pray it will happen tonight (I am at 24). I joined Dreamstime several months ago and was elated when some of my photos were accepted. I used every ounce of my creativity to create the best images that I knew how and was surprised to find that my images were actually being purchased!

I have always been obsessed with photography as well as theater and drawing, but like any other artist I have always been a cruel critic of myself. I have always doubted my own capabilities. So the first thing I did was to purchase better equipment than what I already had because I was certain that my photos would be a result of the camera and not a result of my photography. And while my new camera is certainly producing higher quality images, I am also realizing that it takes more than just a generic photo to be a stock photographer.

Generic. That was my first impression of what stock photography was. I thought creating a generic image that could be used by anyone was the ultimate stock. I researched many sites before finding Dreamstime and I honestly believed that the more generic an image was, the more acceptable it would be. But after finding Dreamstime I have scoured through hundreds of thousands of photos and have realized how much flair and imagination these images and contributors have compared to other sites. I no longer think that stock should just be generic. Now I believe that stock should be usable and yet have an artsy, authentic flair behind the image!

I always enjoy looking over the images of my fellow stock photographers in order to learn what I can do better myself. I have read how I should keyword and what type of tripod to use and pretty much any other advice that has been freely handed out to me by those more accomplished than I am. But the more I research Dreamstime, the more I realize that the other sites are only producing generic photos, and contributors here are creating art. Even if that art is usable stock. Each contributor is creating authentic and amazing photos that anyone can enjoy!

Hopefully I will wake up tomorrow and see lucky 25 on my account! But if not, I will continue to pour through the other contributors images in order to teach myself the art of taking authentic stock photos!

Thank you, thank you!! I am really excited about being a part of Dreamstime! I actually had a conversation with a woman who purchases photos and she also told me that Dreamstime is head and shoulders above the rest of the stock sites :) I agree!

I had a similar start. I looked around for the most "generic" looking things. Very clean images without any distractions. Then I figured out that it was the concept or story of the image that was important.

Ronalesa, many thanks for all you have said. I full agree with you, I joined DT for the same reasons. I don't know if your images may be defined "generic", what I know is that after only several months they sold well!
