Maple Pecan Pie Recipe

posted on 7th of february, 2012

Everything tastes better with REAL maple syrup. Not that fake artificial corn syrup crud! We pour it on ice cream, make maple syrup cocktails and use it in cooking. Living on the border of Vermont, we take pride in real honest to goodness maple syrup. Next month will be the start of the syruping season when local producers tap the sugar maple trees, start collecting sap and boiling it down into sugary liquid gold.

Did you know it takes 25-75 gallons of tree sap to make one gallon of maple syrup? The sap is collected in early spring when the trees are waking up from a long winter nap, the days are warmer but the nights are still cold. The trees are not harmed in the process. I'll be out taking pictures of the operations soon!

Meanwhile try this recipe:

1 cup pure maple syrup
3/4 cup (...

Happy Valentine's Day!

posted on 13th of february, 2012

Anyone else out there (Men I am talking to you) get the feeling some of these made up holiday's are just traps to fall into? The hints start flowing from the significant others, followed by "oh I don’t need anything for Valentine's day" and the ads on TV make you feel like you need to run out to Vic Secrets and stand around with a red face looking at lacy underwear. Reminds me of the old joke. The sales lady in the bra department is trying to help out the husband. "Is she like a grapefruit, orange or egg" and the husband says "that’'s it, she is like an egg - fried!"

Then there is the one about the farmer in the city for the day shopping for his wife at the lingerie store on Valentine's day: A young businessman came to the register with a lacy black negligee. My aunt...

I like your friend's comment in the paper - but I liked the wine and lobster dinner my hubby took me for last night - and the dozen roses he sent. Made up or not, it's a fun holiday - and your little pooch is very cute. Hope you treated your wife well :)
Happy (belated) Valentine's Day to all !

Has Spring Sprung Already?

posted on 27th of february, 2012

I just got back from a fantastic school vacation at Stowe, Vermont - cross country skiing at the Trapp Family (Sound of Music) resort, downhill at the Mt. Mansfield and snowshoeing up the Pinnacle Trail.

We were treated to a nice blast of fresh powder on our last day of skiing at Stowe and it was heaven. No chattering skis on groomed ice which is a real treat this winter.

While it seems like our local winter fun has just begun, else where it seems that spring has already sprung. A recent trip to our local big box store seems that the retailers are already on to summer! The snow shovels have been long replaced by bags of mulch and beach chairs! My brother from the Boston area says flowers are blooming!

I've gotten my brain thinking of spring lately while still wanting to enjoy some more snow...

Snow is falling here in New Hampshire. Might get some winter shots yet!

I spoke (wrote) too soon!
It was warm and spring-like out yesterday and drizzling this morning - but that rain just turned to snow! If it sticks I'll still have a chance to hang some ornaments on a snowy pine tree and get some photos for next Christmas - and I was sitting here sketching out ideas for spring shoots!

Great photos!
We've had only one snow storm of any consequence here - back in October! My daffodils will be up early this year again I"m sure.
You've inspired me to get out my camera and try shooting into Lightroom 3. I'm thinking of all those summer props I've got waiting to be put to creative use.
