Unexpected Benefits

posted on 21st of april, 2013

I shoot a lot of pictures of nature and my children. While nature shots are great to compose and take your time getting the perfect shot, children are unpredictable.

This unpredictability, that is, letting children be themselves, has yielded some great images.

My suggestion, bring them somewhere they can explore and be curious. These actions can lead to some great, unexpected shots.

Recently, I took a series of images of one of my daughters exploring a beach in Cape Cod. It was late afternoon and winds were gusting about 20 mph. The sun was saturating the ocean creating a silhouette of my daughter against the ocean. The wind blew her hear straight up creating a really interesting shot.

This image is currently in que for review and hope to have it on the site soon.

My advice, let your kids be kids while exploring somewhere interesting like a beach, park, caves, forest, waterfalls, and snap away without directing them and you will yield some great images. Have a wide angle and telephoto lens available to vary the images layout. Like the image below shows her looking out over a calm lake.

I shoot with a Nikon D90 18-105mm and 55-300mm lenses, but will change out to do macro/micro work with a Nikon 85 micro lens.

thank you and happy shooting
