Photoshop Does Wonders For Smiles

posted on 3rd of june, 2013

I run Internet marketing campaigns for dentists. It's a niche that I sort of fell into and have become passionate about. One of the constant challenges in marketing dentists is finding pictures of beautiful smiling people that look great on their websites AND that the dentists don't freak out about when they see the pics on their sites.

Right or wrong, the assumption that dentists make is that every photo on their website needs to represent fine dentistry. They generally don't care that a photo of a smiling woman could represent a patient who is in Phase 2 of a 3-phase treatment plan, and that the pièce de résistance in Phase 3 is to replace that missing molar. They think that a potential patient is going to go to their website and see a smiling woman with a slightly crooked incisor but otherwise gorgeous appearance and think, "Ew, that dentist must not be very good if he couldn't fix that!"

So, my dilemma as a marketer is whether I spend an extra hour hunting down portraits of flawless smiles, or just download a woman's photo that is nearly perfect, and touch up that one problematic aspect of their teeth. I do both, but would prefer that minor flaws be fixed ahead of time so I have more to choose from!

I do have some professional training in Photoshop, but I don't think that these tweaks are so difficult that a photographer with intermediate PS experience couldn't do them as well.

Here are just a couple of Dreamstime photos that I've recently downloaded and corrected:

Neither took an inordinate amount of time to correct, but transformed the image from an image that I couldn't use to one that is more than adequate for any cosmetic dentistry page.

If you're a photographer who wants to see more money for the portraits that you take, I would encourage you to take the time and touch up your photos with some Photoshop dentistry. It may seem a little silly or shallow, but you'll see more demand for your work from image-conscious medical and dental professionals.

I agree 100%. Doing Photoshop dentistry has given me the keen eye to always be scrutinizing the teeth of every person I meet. It's weird but I really never paid much attention to people's teeth but now the first thing I notice about a person when I meet them is the health of their teeth.
