Shoot it or lose it

posted on 7th of july, 2013

I just came back from one of my favorite shooting spots for flowers and critters, Flamingo Gardens I went to shoot some video of two of the waterfalls on the property and get some more shots of the various critters that roam the gardens. I hadn't been there in 4 months or so.

Imagine my disappointment when I went inside only to find that the lush vegetation had completely overgrown the falls. You could hear them, but you couldn't see them, so, no video.

I did the same thing to myself on a recent trip to St. Augustine. A shrimp boat was tied to a dock out in a salt marsh. Nice shot, but I was driving and thought I'd come back the next day to shoot it instead of stopping right then. Sure enough, when I went back, the boat was gone and so was my shot.

I think I have finally learned that when a shot presents itself, take it or you may not get another chance to shoot it again.

In Romania is a proverb:"What's in your hand is not lying!".Or more simply: shoot it when you see it! Always to have the camera with you! Don't worry.Be happy!:)

Totally agree! We need to take the moment, so many thinks can change... light, weather conditions etc!

I call those my safety shots. I do the same thing stalking wild life. Get a shot, move in, another shot, move in...then when they take off I still have something to work with.

Yep...shoot it when you see it. Sometimes it is better to get a shot with so so light than no shot at all. I have learnt that over and over again. I now always have my camera with me.

About me

An old sea captain now on shore. I have been a boat captain for over 30 years. I love to shoot photos when ever I can. I've traveled extensively, although quite often without a camera which I regret. Now I shoot everyday wherever I can.
