The Three Sister‘s Chant

posted on 23rd of january, 2017

In "Macbeth" William Shakespeare uses the three witches characters, sometimes called as the weird sisters. The Three Witches represent evil, darkness, chaos, they appear with rain and thunder and their presence refers to treason and impending doom. Generally their role in Macbeth is approached as a philosophical question of destiny: Is Macbeth‘s life predetermined or is he a master of his own fate?
If the life of Macbeth is already determined, than the sisters are informing him on his future. On the other hand, if he is a master of his own fate, than the three wiches are manipulating him. It seems that a Shakespeare leaves this question open for the audience will.
Here‘s a short visual version of their chant scene :

Thrice the brinded cat hath mew'd... Thrice and once, the hedge-pig whin'd...tis time! 'tis time! In the poison'd entrails throw.— Toad, that under cold stone, Days and nights has thirty-one; Swelter'd venom sleeping got, Boil thou first i' the charmed pot!
Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and caldron bubble.

Fillet of a fenny snake, In the caldron boil and bake; Eye of newt, and toe of frog, Wool of bat, and tongue of dog, Adder's fork, and blind-worm's sting, Lizard's leg, and owlet's wing,— For a charm of powerful trouble, Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.
Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and caldron bubble.

Scale of dragon; tooth of wolf; Witches' mummy; maw and gulf .. Of the ravin'd salt- sea shark; Root of hemlock digg'd i the dark; Liver of blaspheming Jew; Gall of goat, and slips of yew ... Sliver'd in the moon's eclipse; Nose of Turk, and Tartar's lips;
Finger of birth-strangled babe Ditch-deliver'd by a drab,— Make the gruel thick and slab: Add thereto a tiger's chaudron, For the ingrediants of our caldron.
Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and caldron bubble.

Cool it with a baboon's blood,
Then the charm is firm and good (Witches chant from Shakespear "Macbeth").

The image of three witches has appeared in various forms of art: drawings, music, film. One of my favorite paintings is done by Henry Fuseli, which is carrying an interesting hidden message. There is a great song on this theme performed by a pagan folk band Omnia which makes you feel the atmosphere of the scene very oddly realistic. In general, the history shows that the three sisters have made a big influence on famous, or less known artists. I think, it still will be taken as source for inspiration in a future.

The statue photographed is made by unknown author. One after another time after time purchase occurs.

The lyrics of witches song is used from the Macbeth: Shakespeare William (1993) Macbeth; Dover Publications.
